  • Reliable Shared Hosting V Dedicated Web Server Hosting

    Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

What do you want from your web hosting services? Do a have a high traffic site or are you a complete newcomer? Your situation will determine whether you should be looking for reliable shared hosting or dedicated web server hosting so this article is going to explain the main differences to help you get to that point.

An easy way to think of web hosting is to look at it in the same way as housing. Shared Hosting is the rented flat in a block of them and dedicated hosting is your own house. The reason people rent a flat instead of buying a house boil down to two things - they either don’t require a big house or cannot afford it, and hosting is exactly the same.

If you don’t need loads of space and tons of bandwidth then why have a dedicated server when a reliable shared server will give you all you need for a fraction of the price.

    Here are the comparisons:

    SHARED HOSTING +
    1) Great back end support.
    2) No maintenance
    3) Loads of software and tools included
    4) Easy to set up
    5) Low cost

    SHARED HOSTING -
    1) If you get high levels of traffic you may find you use your bandwidth quickly.
    2) Less secure than a dedicated server and thus more open to viruses.

    DEDICATED HOSTING +
    1) Less risk of security issues
    2) More reliable
    3) No bandwidth worries
    4) Everything is under your control.

    DEDICATED HOSTING -
    1) High cost
    2) Can be difficult for beginners
    3) Some dedicated web server hosting services offer no support

Basically the choice is yours but the advice I always give is to start with reliable shared hosting, offered by the likes of Hostgator, as you aren’t risking much capital and you can always upgrade to a dedicated web server hosting service when you need to, although I would recommend LunarPages for dedicated hosting as they offer the best value package I’ve seen.
